On 21 October, the National Council of the Maquiladora and Export Manufacturing Industry (INDEX - Consejo Nacional de Manufactura de Exportación), which represents the interests of more than 1,300 Mexican companies, signed an agreement with the Pan American Development Foundation and Partners of the Americas organization, both of which are responsible for implementing labour law awareness programmes in Mexico. The aim is to encourage exporting companies to comply with the country’s labour reform at a time when the US government is no longer reluctant to trigger the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) rapid response mechanism for breaches of Mexican workers’ trade union rights.
“This is a strategic alliance that will be of great use to all Mexican companies exporting to the United States and Canada,” said Álvaro García, Director of the Labor Committee at INDEX on the day the partnership agreement was signed.
