Almost 40,000 maquiladora sector workers from the northern Mexico city of Matamoros joined in massive strike action calling for a 20% increase in salary as well as an annual bonus of the equivalent of €1,500. Never before seen, this landmark action within Mexico’s manufacturing industry will leave an indelible mark.
On 29 January 2019, at the height of the crisis, some 40,500 maquiladora sector workers in the US|Mexico border city of Matamoros (Tamaulipas State, north-east Mexico) stopped work and joined a strike picket calling on their employers (primarily auto-parts manufacturers) for a 20% rise in salary, an annual bonus of MXN 32,000 (approximately €1,500), as well as a return to a 40-hour working week.
