Unions are hardly present. “In general, Moroccan unions are not well organized” confessed Mohamed Chaibi, Director General of Ciments Morocco, subsidiary of Italcementi. “Union membership is around 6%, which isn’t much” said a spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior. “And yet, we need strong and powerful unions” said Moulay Hafid Elalamy, CGEM outgoing chair. “We are currently working on the revision of the labor code (…). For instance, layoff pay is demanded by employers, not unions.”
