Myanmar: the Vision Zero Fund for the prevention of workplace accidents is launched

On 17 June in Yangon, German Secretary of State for Employment Yasmin Fahimi and the Myanmar Minister for Labor H.E.U Thein Swe inaugurated the fund aimed at creating and/or bolstering local provisions and national legislation for occupational health and safety in producing countries that form part of multinational companies’ supply chains. Co-financed by Germany, the EU, and the U.S., and managed by the ILO, the Vision Zero Fund idea was launched by Germany at the G7 meeting held in Elmau. The first pilot country to benefit is Myanmar. Although the details of how the fund is to operate are starting to be defined, doubts still exist over an approach that only indirectly involves the businesses in question.

Fund gets underway. On 07 and 08 June 2015, two years after the Rana Plaza building collapse, leaders at the G7 meeting met in the south of Germany and gave the green light to the host country’s proposal to set up the ‘Vision Zero’ fund that would aim to improve the situation of workplace accidents occurring in the poorest countries. The idea was made concrete and confirmed during the 12 and 13 October 2015 meeting of G7 Ministers of Employment and Development (c.f. articles No. 9129 and No. 93
