After a debate at the Parliament, on 12 April, the Dutch government reconsidered its decision to open borders, starting 1 January 2007, to the nationals of the new Member States of the European Union. (Ref. 06365)
The final decision of the Dutch government will be made only in November or December. A parliamentary majority, formed by the members of the Labour Party (PVDA, opposition) and the Alliance of Christian democrats (CDA, in power), thinks the government went too fast. These two parties require more concrete guarantees and measures against the unfair competition likely to be exerted by these new immigrants on the labour market.
