Netherlands: employers play the waiting game for the renewal of collective agreements

Everything can still change before June 9th, even if the VVD’s liberals are very high in the polls. No clear coalition seems to be taking shape, and it may take weeks, or even months, which is quite common in the Netherlands, before a coalition agreement leads to the establishment of a government. In the meantime, employers are extremely cautious in negotiating collective agreements. “They are waiting to see which way the wind is going to blow” explained Hans van der Steen, director of the working conditions policies at the AWVN, affiliated with the Federation of Netherlands Employers and Industries (VNO-NCW), the key employers’ organization. “Our members are waiting for the arrival of a new government, which will probably have to take severity measures, maybe with a wage freeze.”
