Netherlands: employers want more flexible working time

The general association of Dutch employers (AWVN), affiliated to the main employers' organization, the Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers (VNO-NCW,) asks for an extension of usual working hours from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. (Ref. 080105)

Employers’ goal is to get more flexibility by spreading the seven or eight hours of the work day from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. “Priority must be given to productivity gains”, thinks Hans van der Steen, AWVN leader. The 850 members of this association, which negotiates 500 of the 900 collective agreements in effect in the Netherlands, deplore the 3% wage increase for this year, whereas productivity only gained 1% last year.
