The proposal made by Henk van Hoof, the Secretary of State for social Affairs and Work, to put back to work the long-term recipients of social assistance (see article 06737) is being severely challenged. (Réf. 06749)
Its idea consists in making work compulsory for the assisted people, as from 1 January 2007, for a maximum period of two years. If a welfare recipient refuses the reintegration job (terugkeerbanen) proposed by their city, their allowance could be reduced. On July 21, a majority formed by the Christian democrat party (CDA, in power) and the Party for progress and work (PVDA, opposition) emerged at the Parliament against this measure, to which municipalities are also opposed, because they would
