Having been three years in the making, the trade union LO Ingeniør got officially up and running on 8 September. Five separate trade unions belonging to LO (The Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions) decided to join forces, creating one union aimed at engineers, whether they are students or graduates. The union has two objectives, to increase the number of engineers joining up and to demonstrate that LO is a confederation which is aimed at workers of all levels, including those who have gone through higher education. To begin with, particular attention will be paid to the issue of working hours, the different methods of remuneration and also the disadvantages of so-called ‘accessibility technology’.
This is a group which is attractive and strategically important for LO. The aim is to bring more engineers and students into the union because, currently, of all the members of the five founding trade unions only 10,000 are engineers. This number can be compared with the 64,000 members Tekna (The Norwegian Society of Graduate Technical and Scientific Professionals) claims to have, and the 75,000 members of Nito (The Norwegian Society of Engineers and Technologists).
