Peruvian miners began their strike on June
30 and it will be over today, July 7. Miners have been striking quite regularly
for over a year. About 30.000 miners supported the strike, which is not much
compared to the 80.000 members of the main trade union, but more and more
unions joined the strike as the days went by. Large mining groups such as Southern
Copper and Antamina decided to hire temps to overcome the consequences of the
strike over production. The strike lost vigor when the governmen
Peru: workers strike for better share of income
The authorities have declared the third national strike in Peruvian mines this year was illegal. About 30.000 people went on a strike to ask for better wages and lower retirement age. But the discontent is wider. Throughout the country, Peruvian workers want a share in the positive results large foreign groups make by exploiting natural resources. Indeed, a general strike will be held on July 9. (Ref. 080565)
