Informal agreement. The negotiating meeting between representatives of the APED (Portuguese Association of Retail Companies) wasn’t held. It was replaced by an informal meeting which led to lifting the strike notice presented for December 24 (see our dispatch No. 091143), after employers announced that they were withdrawing their proposition to increase the work week to 60 hours maximum to face temporary extra activity. The “hour bank” provided for in the new Labor Code allows increasing the work load to 60 hours a week, and 12 hours a day with a 200-hour annual limit. However, the decision can only be made after agreement with unions. The union affiliated with the CGTP – close to the communist party – denounced worsening working conditions. The other key union, UGT, broke away from the movement, choosing to defend employment in the sector.
