Individuals in Portugal who have had lengthy careers will be able to take early retirement, without seeing their pension reduced. Around 15,000 people will be affected by this first phase of reform, which takes effect as of 1 October 2017. The government has announced the opening of talks with social partners, to develop its planned pension reforms, which it hopes to complete by 2018 and by the end of its term.
Long careers. The reform to rules on early retirement applies to all individuals that have had lengthy careers. The special regime, allowing workers to retire without a cut to their pension, applies to people whose careers have lasted 48 years or more, as well as those who began working at 14 years of age and, come the age of 60, have paid contributions for 46 years.
