Informal economy is especially developed in southern European countries. Portugal is no exception to the rule; it is looking for solutions to fight this form of underground economy which slows the country's economic growth down. The COTEC - the Association of Undertakings for Innovation - recently presented recommendations to the government. (Ref. 080646)
Portugal comes third in terms of informal economy, which represents 22.3% of its GDP. It comes after Greece (28.3%) and Italy (26.3%), and is even with Spain. The building and tourism sectors are affected the most. The COTEC (the Association of Undertakings for Innovation), ordered a study to the researchers of the catholic University of Lisbon, which enabled it to present 61 recommendations to the government.
