Four public holidays that had been revoked in 2013 as part of Portugal’s program of austerity measures are set to be reinstated. The text due to be approved by parliament on 08 January intends for the reinstatement of two non-religious days off on 05 October and on 01 December. The Socialist government that had included the reinstatement of holidays in its election program (elections on 04 October 2015) has already engaged with the Roman Catholic Church as the two other cancelled holidays relate to religious events.

Approval of their reinstatement (05 October Republic day and 01 December restoration of Portugal independence from Spain) rests with the National Assembly where the majority left is expected to vote in favor on 08 January.
