The Portuguese social partners are starting negotiations on raising the national minimum wage with the government is looking to raise the level as of January 1, 2015. However unions are looking for an immediate rise (the CGTP) and that the higher level apply retroactively from June 1, 2014 (UGT). Employers are for the moment sitting on the sidelines. The CGTP has announced that on September 11, 2014 it is mobilizing its members in front of the national Assembly to defend collective agreements and demand an immediate rise in the minimum wage, which is presently set at 485 euros (before tax) per month.
A minimum wage. Even though it was not on the agenda during the resumption of social negotiations the social partners have in fact discussed the question of raising the minimum wage. The CGTP, which aligns itself closely to the Communist party, is looking for an immediate rise to 515 euros per month rising further to 540 euros on January 1, 2015 versus the 485 euros presently in place. The more centrist union UGT is looking for either 500 euros per month applied retroactively to June1, 2014...
