Portugal: social partners launch negotiations on the introduction of a duodecimal bonus system

The Portuguese government promised unions and employers a bargaining round for the application of the duodecimal system for bonuses given in the private sectors (i.e. over two years). The social partners agree in theory but are worried about the impact on workers' buying power following the introduction of a fiscal surtax in 2013 which will apply to wages amended by the introduction of the bonus. Bonuses. There are two kinds of bonuses in Portugal: the Christmas bonus and the wider holiday bonus, generally for the summer. Their amount is the same as the salary, based on 12 months and subject to taxation and social contributions. Thus, the Christmas and holiday bonus are traditionally called 13th and 14th months.
