30 km south of Portugal’s capital Lisbon social conflict continues at the Volkswagen Palmela facility. The main CGTP affiliated union the SITE-SUL is challenging the mandatory Saturday working that the company management proposed as a way to managing the production upturn. UGT, the independent union federation argues the SITE-SUL is being irresponsible. Strike action over the issue actually took place at the end of August and since then management has been pursuing talks with the unions in an attempt to find a solution.
Conflict. SITE-SUL is the main union operating at the Autoeuropa facility. It is affiliated with the Communist Party friendly CGTP and is against the management proposal for mandatory Saturday working. Autoeuropa submitted a new agreement allowing the implementation of a six-day production week, with obligatory Saturday working in exchange for a pay rise (c.f. article No. 10325).
