Following a call by the CESP, the trade union of retail and services workers – a member union of the FEPCES, the Portuguese federation of trade unions for retail, services and office workers, within General Confederation of the Portuguese Workers (CGTP), and one of the most representative unions in the sector – a warning for a 24-hour strike was issued. The action would take place on 1 May, which is supposed to be a public holiday, in hypermarkets and supermarkets in Portugal. The union is calling for progress on the collective bargaining negotiations that began more than two years ago and remain at a standstill. Salary increases and the opening of stores on Sundays and on holidays are at the centre of these discussions. The news comes at a time when public opinion is leaning increasingly towards Sunday closures of hypermarkets and supermarkets.
