Romania: labor inspectors get more powers to better combat illegal labor

Listing data online.  Emil Boc’s democratic-liberal administration changed the competences of labor inspectors.  First, they are no longer required to register labor contracts directly at local level.  Now, within the framework of the law on the protection of employees, employers have to list and register their employees online, both for new contracts (within 20 days after signature but prior to commencement of work) and for amendments and changes to existing contracts (within 5 days).  Failure to register a labor contract will lead to a fine of LEI 1,500 (nearly €350) per contract.  This provision marks the end of the labor notebook, and employees’ information will now be saved and kept in electronic format.
