Romania: minimum wage increase for January 1, 2008

On November 13, after several months of negotiations with social partners, the government announced the amount of the single minimum wage which will come into effect on January 1, 2008. The latter should amount to 500 lei (about 150 Euros) a month. Although managers are satisfied by this amount, unions want more and threaten to start a protest movement. (Ref. 070960)

Currently, there are two minimum wage levels in Romania: that set by collective conventions (440 lei – about 128 Euros) and that decided by the government (currently 390 lei – about 113 Euros.) When he announced the amount of the minimum wage for 2008, the Prime Minister, Calin Popecu-Tariceanu, declared that this 28% increase was considerable; however, he asked social partners to be careful in establishing wage policies, for fear of serious inflation.
