Romania: the government is working on implementing a new dual system of professional education

The Ministry of Education has launched a public debate on the proposal for a new dual system of professional education, the aim of which is to offer additional viable training paths for youngsters who finish the 8th grade (14 – 15 year olds) and to address the shortage of qualified workforce on the Romanian market.

Romania is looking to deploy a system that has met with success in Germany, Australia, China, and elsewhere. The 8th grade cohort is important, as this group is the most vulnerable in terms of opting out of education.

The new system will not be replacing the current network of professional schools, but instead it aims to offer an alternative. The new dual schools would be set up in areas where and one or more companies request and their curriculums would be decided on companies’ real needs. Atte
