The new law concerning minimum wage, which the Slovakian National Assembly adopted on December 5, 2008, came into effect on February 1, 2008. It introduces a new procedure for the annual minimum wage increase. Unions, who wanted a gradual increase up to 60% of the average wage, are very critical. (Ref. 080119)
In accordance with the previous terms, unions and employers’ representatives had until the end of July to agree on the amount of the minimum wage’s increase. If negotiations between the social partners failed, the government was to set the increase, with no limits to its decision. The new law plans a new procedure in three steps : first, unions and staff representatives have to present their agreement by July 15.
