The agreement signed on 20 December by Spanish labour minister Yolanda Díaz and representatives of the CCOO and UGT unions provides for a reduction in the working week from the current 40 hours to 37.5 hours without any reduction in pay. The employers' organisations have refused to sign up to the text. It is due to be submitted shortly to the Council of Ministers for approval, before being put to a vote in parliament.
By agreeing on 20 December to reduce working time to 37.5 hours a week, the signatories’ aim is to have the provision included in all agreements and collective bargaining agreements so as to ensure that it comes into force for all employees on 31 December 2025. The form of the agreement remains to be defined, as the employers’ confederations, CEOE and Cepyme, have refused to discuss the methods of application of an agreement that they reject outright.
