The Basque employers’ confederation has announced that it is refusing to take part in negotiations on a regional minimum wage, as demanded by the regional nationalist unions ELA, LAB, ESK, Steilas and Etxalde. The employers’ representatives said they oppose such a measure in principle, pointing out that a Basque minimum wage, which is higher than in the rest of Spain, could affect the region’s economy because it “would jeopardise the competitiveness and sustainability of businesses”.

While the trade unions of the Basque Country and Navarre are calling for the negotiation of a minimum wage specific to their region, the Basque employers’ organisation Confebask is closing the door to any discussion. It points out that thanks to social dialogue, the average wage is 18% higher in the region than in Spain as a whole.
