Retail chain El Corte Inglés, Spain's leading department store chain, has presented the trade unions with a reorganization plan as a way of coping with the changing face of both the retail sector and consumer habits. The plan includes the possibility for employees aged 59 and over to retire earlier than the current retirement age of 66 as well as opportunities for staff to be redeployed from general services roles to the store outlets.
“The company has communicated to employee representatives its intention to present a plan to redeploy staff from central and regional administrative services in order to strengthen the stores, lean into favourable commercial tail winds, and improve how we tend to the public,” said the group’s management in a statement, pointing out that “management optimisation is enabling a reduction in central services that can be put to the benefit of commercial establishments.”
