On 13 December, the Spanish government approved in first reading, a series of measures to facilitate work-life balance and co-responsibility within families. Included is the right to two new paid leave periods of 4 and 5 days to help with family care and emergencies, as well as the possibility of taking 8 weeks unpaid that can be distributed over time until a child is 8 years old.
This measure is part of a broader family law project, designed to adapt and extend existing aid to more easily cater to new family situations (single-parent and blended family situations in particular). It is also aimed at families requiring greater support, such as mothers who are victims of gender violence, as well as those with family member living with disabilities or long-term illnesses.
