Spain: government promotes selective immigration to fight clandestine work

Spanish firms employed 116 000 immigrant workers chosen directly in their country of origin, between January and June. These contracts represent almost 20 % of the immigrants who entered Spain during the same period. They were concluded, either through quotas set between the central government and regions followed by a cooperation with the countries of origin, or by means of contracts negotiated directly abroad by applicant firms. According to the government, the generalization of selective immigration in the countries of origin could be one of the solutions to the immigration problems Spain faces.
