On 27 May 2025, the Spanish government published a decree-law in the country's official state gazette (BOE) facilitating access to early retirement. The law establishes clear criteria for people in roles with particularly high rates of illness or early mortality to bring forward their retirement date and for calculating the relevant shortening of working life.
This procedure, based on objective indicators, was approved in advance by employer and trade union representatives in the social agreement of 31 July 2024. The agreement contained a series of measures aimed to foster the “transition to flexible retirement tailored to each individual”, bringing forward or postponing the retirement age depending on individual circumstances and careers.
