The minimum wage floor has risen to €1,080 gross per month over 14 months, representing 60% of the average wage in Spain, as recommended by the EU Directive on adequate minimum wages. The minimum level has thus been raised by 47% over the last five years as the gap narrows compared to the legal minima applying across the rest of the European Union.
On 31 January 2023 the Spanish government announced an 8% increase in the Interprofessional Minimum Wage (SMI), effective from 01 January 2023, rising from €1,000 to €1,080 gross per month. According to the framework established by Spanish labour legislation, this sum is paid over 14 months, that includes two extraordinary payments (one in June and one in December), making the equivalent rate per month for 12 months to be €1,260.
