On 09 February 2022, Spain’s Minister of Labour agreed with the trade unions on an increase in the interprofessional minimum wage (SMI - Salario Mínimo Interprofesional) of €35 per month from €965 to €1,000 gross. As provided for in Spanish labour legislation the €1,000 is paid in 14-month periods (a double payment in July and December) making €14,000 per annum. This increase takes effect retroactively from 01 January 2022.
This boost represents a +3.6% increase that will affect around 1.8 million employees, according to the CCOO trade union. It is part of the roadmap of Pedro Sánchez’s left-wing coalition government, which, when it came to power in 2018, made a committment to the unions to raise the historically very low SMI and bring it closer to its European neighbours.
