Nissan Motor Iberica withdrew its layoff plan (ERE) which planned 1.680 job cuts on its Zona Franca site, near Barcelona. After weeks of strikes and protests, Nissan agreed to bargain with the works council for a new employment reduction plan, thanks to arbitration by the Catalonian regional authorities which fought to preserve the industrial network in the region. Local government representatives managed to convince Nissan's management to seek a temporary solution to avoid immediate layoffs and give more time to find a global solution to absorb the impact of the lost jobs on the region. signed with the staff representatives on December 5, the Japanese carmaker accepted
to turn the 1.680 layoffs planned (30% of the workforce) into a temporary employment
suspension with shifts which will affect 3.500 employees for more than three
months – between December 15, 2008 and March 31, 2009, for 75 days maximum. Besides,
the company commits to pay the concerned employees up to 90% of their wages as unemployment
