According to the consultation notice, the upcoming bill aims to reduce the maximum working time from 40 hours a week to 37.5 hours, calculated on the basis of an annual average and without any reduction in pay. The text points out that the last legal regulation of maximum working hours in Spain dates back to 1983, but points out that over the last 40 years “collective bargaining has enabled progress to be made towards a reduction in working hours, albeit of varying scope and intensity”...
Spain: public consultation opens on move to 37.5-hour working week
Following the failure of negotiations with employers' organisations on the reduction of working hours, the Spanish labour ministry is standing firm on its plan to present a bill to reduce the working week from 40 to 37.5 hours from 1 January 2025. It has opened a preliminary public consultation, running from 23 November to 7 December, which should include a better framework for the effective monitoring of hours worked and the right to disconnect.
