Spain: sanction against Alcampo (Auchan) for spying on its employees

The Spanish Agency for the Protection of Data (AEPD) launched a sanction procedure against Alcampo (Auchan group) after the complaint filed by the CCOO union. The latter denounced the introduction, on the site of the Ferrol supermarket (Galicia), of three hidden cameras without employees knowing about it in the premises reserved for personnel. The cameras were installed at the end of 2007 and, a few weeks later, the management used the content of the tapes, violating the Organic Law on the protection of data. The evidence gathered was used to dismiss an employee and sanction 11 more with a wage suspension for serious misconduct. Alcampo justified that, on the tapes, the employees in question were caught smoking and eating during work hours, to which the people charged answered that they were allowed to until then.
