On November 3, 2008, the head of the Spanish government, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, presented a series of initiatives to abate unemployment, gone from 7.5% to 11.3% in ten months. Recruitment premium, incentive to start up a business, or even intervention of temporary work agencies in restructurings, are some of the measures included in this plan to boost the labor market. Here are some of the measures regarding employment:
- An annual €1.500 bonus for companies which recruit an unemployed person with a family;
- Incentives to companies which create jobs connected to research, innovation and renewable energy;
- Incentives to self-employment, offering unemployed people who present a start-up project to receive 60% of their benefits (instead of 40% currently);
- Recognizing temporary work agencies as placement and retraining agencies during restructurings.
