Spain: the social security draws a list of risky situations for breastfeeding employees

The guidance document, developed in concert with the Spanish pediatrics association, will be used to evaluate working conditions and possible side effects on breastfeeding and the child's health. It will be sent to occupational doctors and health centers. It completes a previous document which only took into account pregnancy, while the 2007 Equality Act has introduced the notion of risk during breastfeeding and the obligation to protect the concerned employees. The report divides the risks which should be taken into account during breastfeeding into three categories:



  • Physical, chemical or toxic risks. The document doesn’t point to any specific impact for physical efforts, vibrations or noise on breastfeeding. On the contrary, it introduces a code to identify the most detrimental chemical substances (lead, pesticides, solvents, anesthetic gas, rubber and pharmaceutical products) with tables specifying the possible toxic impact on the child’s health.
