According to a study published by the technical cabinet of the UGT union, the number of employees concerned by employment reduction procedures (EREs) - partial, temporary or permanent - increased of 42% in the first 10 months of 2008. During this period, 3.857 procedures were accepted (out of 4.267 presented) and affected 67.567 people, i.e. 41.8% more than in 2007. The union demands increased control over these procedures when they concern businesses making profit. (Ref. 090086)
Economic reasons for EREs have increased of 26% compared to 2007 and reasons related to “organization and production” soared of 94%. In 88% of cases, the procedures are negotiated with staff representatives. Workers in the industry are affected the most. However, the increase was fastest in the construction sector, with a 452% increase compared to 2007. Valencia, Cataluña, Galicia and the Basque Country are the most badly hit.
