The UGT and Workers' Commissions unions called for a general and consumer strike on November 14 to protest against the unprecedented austerity measures applied by the government. This call is in line with the European Day of Action called by the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC): on the same day, Portugal will also mobilize, for the first general strike ever in the Iberian peninsula. “We have unanimously decided to call for a general 24-hour strike as part of the European day of action and solidarity organized by the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC, see our dispatch No. 120617), said Cándido Méndez, general secretary of UGT. This decision was made on October 19 after the Social Summit bringing together unions and over 150 social organizations and associations in the country.
