Spain: unions present own-initiative bill to amend the labor market reform voted in September

When presenting the text, the union leaders, Candido Mendez (UGT) and Ignacio Fernandez Toxo (CCOO), explained that they were hoping for a chance to revive the debate and give the government the possibility to “adjust” the aim taken under pressure from the European Commission and the markets, which materialized in the labor market reform adopted last September (see our dispatch No.  100507).  The own-initiative bill must gather 500,000 signatures within 9 months following its registration to be debated in Parliament.  Unions are hoping to get the support they need in time and to present their bill to Parliament in the spring, to revive a social debate right before the partial regional and local election of May 2011.  for them, the point is to show that union organizations gave a credible alternative to the “social cuts” ratified by the law in force since September.
