When presenting the text, the union leaders, Candido Mendez (UGT) and Ignacio Fernandez Toxo (CCOO), explained that they were hoping for a chance to revive the debate and give the government the possibility to “adjust” the aim taken under pressure from the European Commission and the markets, which materialized in the labor market reform adopted last September (see our dispatch No. 100507). The own-initiative bill must gather 500,000 signatures within 9 months following its registration to be debated in Parliament.
