Sweden: because of increased industrial accidents, the construction sector gets new prevention resources

A subject that was no longer a priority as working conditions are getting harder. A survey published in 2009 and carried out by members from Byggnadsarbetareförbundet (Byggnads, construction union) and Ledarna (sveriges chefsorganisation, Swedish union of heads of businesses) among 1,490 people – workers and rig managers alike – already said that the safety level and working conditions were worsening made a link with the economic crisis: the pace was faster, deadlines shorter and pressure on sites stronger. Most of the people surveyed also noticed that businesses wanted to save: 77% said that their company was spending less on security or making them take risks to cut costs; 56% said that saving went through the removal of protection equipment and; finally, 44% said that safety routine was rushed through. However, the tragedies happened last march (3 people died in one week on sites) pointed to the consequences of this negligence.
