Since July 1, 2008, a new law ("jämställdhetbonusen" or "equality bonus") came into force in order to encourage fathers to share parental leave with mothers. (Ref. 080668)
Model parental leave. Created in 1974, the Swedish parental leave is regularly cited as an example for encouraging fathers’ involvement in the family life. After a birth, Swedish parents are entitled to a 480-day paid parental leave if the child was born after 2002 and 450 days if the child was born before.
