As an answer to the decision made by some union organizations - e.g. Transportarbetareförbund, the transport workers’ union - to not accept members from the far-right party (Sverige Demokraterna, SD - the Swedish Democrats), the party created, in December 2013, a new union called “Löntagarna” (the employees). Presented as apolitical, and officially aiming to become the direct rival of the LO confederation (the Swedish union confederation), it created its first sectoral federation in March, in private security.
Grounds for creating a new union. One election at a time, the SD party is getting bigger and bigger in Sweden’s political landscape. Close to the far right, it is notably in favor of limited immigration. For several years, unions have been officially opposing this party, like LO which, in 2008, declared that affiliation with the confederation was not compatible with SD’s principles.
