On June 23, the social partners agreed to a 6-percent wage increase in the private sector. The negotiations took place at central level but the deal provides for a return to sectoral negotiations in 2015, as it used to be the norm in the country. Nevertheless, political stability remains a prerequisite, which should be secured after the election at the end of this year. This increase is in line with a search for balance: in spite of an ailing economy, supporting buying power is a key element to get out of the crisis for good.
The two major professional organizations in the country – the Tunisian Union for Industry, Commerce and Handicrafts (UTICA) and the General Union of Tunisian Labor (UGTT) – agreed on a 6-percent wage increase for basic pay in the entire private sector.
