The UK supermarket cooperative Co-op has launched a new compassionate leave policy for its 57,000 employees, granting them 10 days of leave – taken at any time and not necessarily in a single block – when someone close to them dies or is seriously ill.
What sets the leave policy announced by Co-op this month apart is that it may be taken by a staff member when somebody close to them dies or is seriously ill, regardless of their relationship. Managers may decide on a case-by-case basis to extend this paid leave if they deem it necessary. “We know that modern life can be complicated, so there are no restrictions about the relationships or situations that we give compassionate leave for,” says Claire Costello, chief people and inclusion...
