The White House has recently provided details on the social measures that will accompany the CHIPS and Science Act, which aims to support the US semiconductor industry and was ratified by President Joe Biden on 9 August. Companies hoping to benefit from the $39 billion of government funding will need to guarantee "affordable, accessible and high-quality" childcare for their staff.
Companies hoping to receive government funding will have to provide their employees with childcare options. They can create a dedicated space near their sites, subsidise existing nurseries, or pay compensation to their employees. It doesn’t matter how they do it, as long as it is part of the business plan. There will be no “blank cheques”, warned US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, whose departments will examine firms’ applications.
