In a statement issued on 29 August, the Pittsburgh Association of Tech Professionals announced that it has begun taking the necessary steps for union representation of employees working for Google supplier HCL. Supported by the United Steelworkers (USW) union, the PATP says it has filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board for a union representation election with HCL, with 66% of the 90 eligible employees signing cards seeking union representation. The NLRB must now ensure that the signatures are compliant and organise a ballot, during which employees will declare themselves either in favour or against this union being recognised. If the result is a positive one for the PATP, it says it will “begin the process of bargaining for fair wages and benefits as quickly as possible”, with the aim of achieving those that are in place for Google teams, since “HCL’s 90 employees work side-by-side with those of the giant corporation for far less compensation and few, if any, of the perks”.
