This weekend details of the project agreement concluded on 15 September 2015 between the United Automobile workers (UAW) union and one of the ‘big 3’ automakers, Fiat Chrysler, were made public. In the coming weeks the four year agreement will be put to the vote by the group’s 36,000 workers. The agreement covers salaries, pensions and health insurance. It aims to reduce wage gaps between new hires and senior employees and to implement a performance related bonus. It also establishes a healthcare purchase cooperative for a wider pool of members.
Dennis Williams the president of UAW hopes to sign the agreement on 28 September. He expects his members to sign it because “we have made enormous progress,” he wrote in a letter to members. His goal was to erase the current two-tier salary system that was implemented directly after the financial crisis took hold in 2007, when General Motors went bankrupt and the Federal government had to give financial support.
