The UAW’s retiree trust fund and the carmaker are launching a two-year pilot program in southeastern Michigan open to all workers and retirees in the group. The goal is to "bend the cost curve" of healthcare by treating chronic diseases, which account for 61 percent of health costs, early on. Between 1,200 and 1,500 unionized workers and retirees are expected to join this voluntary program on the recommendation of their doctors as of July 1. Those workers suffer from five chronic diseases – diabetes, asthma, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
