American unions have been declining, their total size going from 35 to 12.4%. This can be explained by several external factors (political will to decrease their influence, industrial decline), and unions’ intrinsic weaknesses. This first chapter of a series dedicated to American unionism, which we launched in the context of the Employee Free Choice Act supported by President Obama, supposed to facilitate union presence in businesses, focuses on this decline.
