The UAW already enjoys IG Metall’s full support in its efforts to unionize at German-owned auto manufacturers and suppliers. The UAW still has to establish its first European-like works council in the United States at the Volkswagen Chattanooga plant (c.f. article No. 9070). At Mercedes, the UAW has set up a local chapter in conjunction with support from the general community (c.f. article No. 8634). The BMW plant in the staunch anti-union state of South Carolina is devoid of any UAW presence. For IG Metall, “some German manufacturers are exploiting low-wage environments in the U.S. South, where working conditions — including health and safety situations — tend to be challenging for employees.” The German union thus intends to work alongside the UAW to unionize plants employing some 100,000 workers. The heart of the Transnational Partnership Initiative will be based at the UAW offices at General Motors, Spring Hill in the suburbs of Nashville, Tennessee.

Going forward IG Metall will be shoulder-to-shoulder with the UAW and both will be researching new forms of worker representation for the US....
