For the first time in 5 years, the number of unionized employees in the private sector is higher than in the public sector. Continuously down for several decades, businesses’ union membership rate went back up last year, though it is still below 7 percent. So unions aren’t crowing over victory but on the contrary paying homage to movements organized by non-unionized workers to gather as many as possible.
The unionization rate of American employees is still historically low. But, after yet another drop in 2012 (see article No. 130059), the latest figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that, last year, it held steady at 11.3 percent (14.5 million, a little more than in 2012 – not enough to change the number after the dot, but keep in mind that 1.5 million more employees are covered by contracts negotiated by unions without being members).
